Warmer Weather...

So the Superbowl was pretty awesome. At least the end of the game was. My highlight was the G.I. Joe teaser. I've been waiting for this movie to happen for a long time and I'm glad it's finally almost here. Only 7 more months! Lame. But the preview did make it look like a really awesomely terrible movie, and for me, there's no better kind. Transformers 2 will also be pretty terrible in an awesome way. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Autobots and Decepticons team up to fight The Fallen ( a ginormous evil guy who's bad for both factions.) Also, the new Fast and Furious trailer looks sweet...

So today it was 51 degrees over here. I decided that I'm ready for spring. Don't get me wrong, I still love winter, but being in a place where the snowfall is minimal and turns to gross slush as soon as it hits the ground makes me want to cry. If I can go outside and play in the snow or snowboard or hydroplane in my neighborhood, then what's the point? Forget winter. NYC sucks in the winter. I'm ready for some warmer weather and by the looks of it, so is global warming. We had about 3 weeks of weather that was cold enough to make me put on my winter coat, but it looks like we're gonna be in the upper 30's from here on out.

I have turned into somewhat of a contented hermit these days. I venture out to the library or to the gym or the movies, but I have no motivation to go out. As much as I love going out and getting ridiculous with friends, this city makes it awfully hard to be spontaneous about it. You really need to plan ahead and figure out everyones schedule and a good central meeting place. By the time people are ready to do anything it's 10 or 11 which wouldn't matter in my old locale, but on the weekends it takes me an hour to get from my apartment to any place below midtown, and god forbid I have to take more than one train. This suits me just fine though, because I'm more than happy to stay in and watch a movie, tv or play halo all weekend. It does make me wonder why I'm living in this city that I can't afford to live in and can't muster up the motivation to take in everything it has to offer. Maybe as the weather gets warmer...

I'm out

tell 'em what to watch: Chuck (NBC 8pm) I love this show. Please watch it. Tonight might be kind of cheesy because it's in 3-D and I'm not sure how that works without 3D glasses. Anyways, it's a great show and it's on the cusp of getting renewed or cancelled.

Best of 2008: Movies

This is late, but with award season in full force I thought it high time to get this list out there. So here is my top 10 movies of the year. It's been a very great year as far as movies go and this summer's blockbusters hold an unusually high number of spots on this list. With new summer hits coming out this year like Transformers 2, Watchmen, Wolverine, G.I. Joe, Dragonball, Fast and Furious, Harry Potter and a bunch of sweet non-blockbusters, I can only hope this year is as good as last.

There were an alarmingly number of good movies this year, which is how I am sure 2009 is going to be weak. Noticeably absent from the list is The Dark Knight. There is kind of a lot of controversy about how good it is and as I have yet to see it in I-Max to get the full effect, I'm not going to include it in my list. I think I've expressed my opinion on it enough. You have all seen it and can make up your own mind as to where it belongs. If I were to rank it, it would be somewhere toward the middle. No higher than 4 and no lower than 8. Anyways, here is the top 10.

10.) Be Kind Rewind
I love Michel Gondry. Easily the most creative and imaginative director in our generation. I can't think of anyone who uses so much and creates such imaginary realities, yet somehow stays grounded and does not turn into preposterous.

9.) Son of Rambow
If you haven't seen this, netflix it asap. It about two kids who want to remake their own version of Rambow and how their friendship evolves. It's pretty great.

8.) Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Woody Allen is on a roll lately. He took Scarlett Johansen, who I don't particularly like and I think is very over rated in both looks and acting chops, and make her into someone I like. First Match Point, then Scoop and now this. Penelope Cruz is at her best and I would completely understand if any girl were to ever leave me for Javier Bardem.

7.) Iron Man
My favorite summer movie. Maybe not as good as Batman Begins but definitely better than TDK and really is set up to have a better sequel than TDK did with the addition on Mickey Rourke and Don Cheadle.

6.) Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Michael Cera can seemingly do no wrong. How long will it take before he bores me is another question, though if he keeps making good choices like he has been, I don't see it happening. The pairing with Kat Dennings worked great and thank god this movie had a soundtrack that lived up to it's name.

5.) Milk
If not for Mickey Rourke, Sean Penn wins the Oscar. He was so good. The whole cast was really great. I thought James Franco really got into his role and made me forget about the disaster that was Pineapple Express.

4.) Gran Torino
As if the movie wasn't going to be good enough, Clint Eastwood took the movie to Michigan and filmed it about 45 minutes down the road from my parents house. Classic Eastwood. He still manages to be more of a badass in his 70s than I will ever be in my lifetime.

3.) The Wrestler

This movie was great. It's not getting enough hype. Aside from the performance of the year (okay maybe it's tied with Sean Penn), the story was great as well. The soundtrack was a pleasant surprise as well, I didn't know anyone but me still lived for 80s hair metal glam rock. Not to mention what I think is the best original song for Bruce Springsteen.

2.) Wall-e

You've all seen it by now I'm sure. Will Disney-Pixar ever make a bad movie? Even Presto, the short film at the beginning, was better than some movies I've seen.

1.) Slumdog Millionaire

What more can I say. If it hasn't made it to a theater near you, give it another week before you decide to drive an hour to the closest theater. It's still expanding and last week opened in 3,000 more theaters. Keep an eye out for this. My pick for best film of the year.

Anyways, the worst movies of 2008 will be posted next. As always, go big or go home.

tell 'em what to watch: Trust Me (TNT @ 9 or 10pm.) I've been looking forward to this series premiere for a while. I'm not a huge fan of shows on TNT but I love Tom Cavanagh and the story looks original and like a great replacement for the dreadfully bad Grey's Anatmoy. I think I'm quitting that show.

Superhero News...

Since there is just too much for me to mention in one blog, this will have to be a 2 part blog. Next time I'll mention all the upcoming movies and release dates but for now I want to talk about movies that are just announced or are still in production. I'm going to try and turn all of you into fanboys like me. If you care about big budget blockbusters at all then this is a very exciting time for you...

If you have been following details of the superhero / comic genre than this week was especially big. Watchmen finished production and I have high hopes for Zack Snyder (300). I recently finished the book and ordinarily I wouldn't trust anyone to do it justice. I originally wasn't a huge fan of 300 when it first came out but upon repeated viewings I find myself loving the movie more and more each day. It really is pretty amazing, and his screen stills from Watchmen seem to be lifted right out of the book itself. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (let's just call it Wolverine...) has also had some exciting news this week. Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights fame (and my boy) signed up to play Gambit. I have actually been dying to make a Gambit movie myself and find this a little distressing but in my head I always cast Matthew Fox (good actor just needs longer hair) and never thought of Taylor but I like the choice. Oddly enough Fox's Lost co-star Dominic Monaghan will be in the film as Blackwing. Taylor looks the part but I am a little worried about the accent which is really what makes up so much of Gambit's character. Also, he signed on to do three movies which means either that he will have a big/important role or that the studio is just playing it safe in case fans love him. Also in Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds has been rumored to have landed the role of Deadpool which is pretty amazing. I love Reynolds and Deadpool and he pretty much is the character. The movie is sounding like it is going to be amazing. Also slated to be in the movie is Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth.

More comic news... Justice League will apparently be without Superman and Batman as the studio doesn't want to conflict with other characters portrayed by different actors in their respective franchise, but if you ask me those two are one of the only reasons I like Justice League so much. Their dynamic is one of the most interesting. The Spider-Man 4 talk has been heating up lately with rumors that my boy Joseph Gordon Levitt will take the helm as spidey. If they make a new one I am really hoping Kirsten Dunst is not in it. She is the worst actress ever. Captain America is slated to be directed by Nick Cassavetes, who, if you don't know, is known for his "gritty" movies though I'm not sure he's the guy to do this. The jury is still out on this one though since they haven't begun casting yet.

Also getting some steam now for next year is Transformers 2. Shia Labeouf claims that it's going to blow the first one out of the water. Obviously I'm excited for it but I swear, if that kid ruins the new Indiana Jones I'm gonna kill him. G.I. Joe is already filming and from what I'm hearing it actually is going to be pretty sweet. What gets me worried though is that so many of these movies get fast tracked and scheduled for an early release which doesn't give people enough time to make a great movie. Anyways, I guess they know they already have my money so they don't really care. Lincoln, Speilberg's next film is going to kill. Laim Neeson looks exactly like Lincoln and with playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America) writing it, it has to be good.

Sad news though for anime fans. It seems that Hollywood plans on bastardizing everything under the sun. I though it was bad that I wanted to make a Cowboy Bebop film but apparently people wanna cash in on some other greats. Dragonball has already begun filming and I'm sure it is going to blow. News about ruining Akira though, they are now planning on splitting it into 2 movies. First of all Akira may be the greatest Anime film of all time and to make it into a live action film with Americans is just silly. It takes place in post-atomic bombed japan and somehow it's going to change location to "new-manhattan." I smell lame. DiCaprio's production company attached itself to the project with him as a producer though no word of him acting in it, thank god. I love him but he can't be in the movie. The movie is going to be based on the 6 part book instead of the 1988 film, and split into each film containing three of the books. Hopefully the movie doesn't happen though it's looking more and more likely.

I had a lot more to talk about but I guess this is going to do it for now. I don't feel like getting into everything else. More soon.

oh ps - if you haven't read Watchmen yet, do so. It is a really great story.

pps - sorry this turned out to be such a nerd post. more movie news on other films not regarding comics or superheroes soon.
