Last Friday marked the end of my first quarter at school. Really the program is 5 quarters which doesn't make sense and they should really think about calling them 'fifths.' As in, "I just finished my first fifth," or "I'm about to start my second fifth." Just a thought. The reason I mention this is not to rub it in to all you working class heroes that I'm still in school and refuse to re-enter the real world, but to note that for the first time since high school I did not miss a class. Just under 3 months and I did not miss a single class. Warm weather, Lake Michigan, a 25 minute commute and none of them could thwart me. It helps that I've got friends in school that I love hanging out with, but the bigger picture is that I'm interested in what I'm doing.
Film school was awesome and I only skipped a few of those classes and those were mostly things I didn't need to go to, but to say I never missed a class there would be a lie. I can't wait until we get to start our TV commercial class and I get to apply my film school expertise (doubtful) to an ad. This was the natural progression that I originally saw when I decided to apply to ad school and I'm excited that I get to work on it soon. End of ramble.
The point of me saying this is that maybe I'm getting more mature? The thought of that makes my inner Peter Pan shudder but it may be happening regardless. I wonder if it's possible to stay young and still grow up. I'm hoping it is because that's pretty much what I've been trying to do my whole life.
Reasons I know I'm old:
1) I tell kids to pull their pants up
2) I'm afraid of teenagers
3) I get tired around 9 and try and go to bed around 10
4) I can no longer relate to anything on MTV
I suppose it's all inevitable. Eventually I'll have kids and hate the music they listen to, unless they're cool and listen to my old records/albums/mp3s. The moral of the day is growing up is lame but, to quote Ozma, "living ain't that hard if you know you're alive."
I'm out. Only make moves when your hearts in it, and live the phrase: the sky's the limit.

oh ps - remember this? 10 years ago when I graduated high school this song had just come out and was our graduation song. Lame.
"When I was a kid, my grandfather used to say to me that . . . a fellow's life wasn't worth mentioning if he hadn't shared it with some folks along the way." - MacGyver

Another Day Closer to Death...
Did anyone watch the MTV VMAs last night? Neither did I. In yet another example that I'm getting older and more out of touch with today's youth, I actually thought it was the MTV Movie Awards. Tomorrow I turn 27. Meh. The only birthday I ever cared about was when I turned 16 because then the world was mine. Once you can drive there is nothing stopping you from doing everything. That license is your ticket out of anything. I didn't care so much about 21 because I had a fake and I was also the last of my friends to turn 21 so the novelty had already worn off. I was somewhat intrigued by turning 25 because then you can rent a car, but then I learned that you can rent one after you turn 18 - it just costs an asinine amount in insurance.
So 27 is just another day closer to death. I'm not actually that morbid, but it's more of an interesting fact than anything. I'm also not that out of touch with today's youth - for example, I just bought the new Jay-Z album last week. He's still cool, right? The problem I have with today's youth is that they're spoiled. Cell phones for 5 year olds? People had pagers when I was in high school. My first cell phone was in college and it was analog - oh my, the static was heinous. Kids don't send notes in class, they text each other under their desks. They don't sneak a coke into the library, they send friends naked pics of some poor slut that Jimmy made out with.
Essentially I don't think kids act like kids anymore. They're growing up too fast. Too much booze, too much sex and too much technology. These kids have access to everything so early they they never get a chance to be innocent. We didn't have high speed internet when I was 10 - we had Oregon Trail. We didn't even have high speed internet in our school when I graduated - it wasn't until college that T3 changed my life. Kids get everything now when they should be first weaned on cartoons and Saved by the Bell and Dawson's Creek. Now they have Gossip Girl and other slutty shows that teach kids it's cool to drink and party and be a terrible person.
Anyway, I'm old and rambling. I'm out. My point is that Kanye West is an asshole, I love Taylor Swift and always will, and I have never seen any of the music videos that they were talking about last night, but Beyonce is pretty nice.

March Not So-Madness...
Historically, I have always been very into March Madness. It seems like if you love basketball it's a pretty great thing. 12 hours straight for 2 days in a row followed by some really close games as the field gets smaller. But for some reason this year I haven't been that into it. I love MSU and I love watching State and I'm super pumped we made it to the sweet 16, but as far as other teams go, I couldn't care less. I am actually still alive and doing pretty well in my pools so that's not the problem. I think I just don't really care anymore. I don't care that Davidson beat Georgetown. I didn't even watch the game. I didn't care about either team all season and while this would usually be an occasion for me to root for one of them, this year I chose not to watch.

I'm glad Davidson won. I love upsets. I'm glad U-Conn lost. I had both of them and Duke in the final four in at least one of my brackets but I still don't care. I love when the underdog wins. That's what the Madness is all about. Rooting for the underdog. I have always taken the first day of the tournament off from whatever I'm doing and sit and watch all day. This year the only reason I did was because State played at 12:30 and I had to watch that. I am pretty sure though that if we ever lose it'll not only be the end of their tournament but mine as well. If it's not State then I could care less who wins.
Anyways, just rambling but I'm not sure if this means that I'm just over March Madness or this is a stage of growing up when you stop caring about things that really don't matter at all. Maybe a little of both. As always, go big or go home...

oh ps - Anyone have any tips on working out lower abs? I've tried many things but can't seem to do anything that works them out really well.

2008: A Year For Change?...
Just a few random things on my mind today. Did anyone get a chance to see my show last night? If so, did they misspell my name in the credits? I kind of figured they would.
One of my weaknesses in life is t-shirts. I love t-shirts. I can't seem to buy enough of them. My favorite kind are made by Obey and are sold at stores like The Buckle and a lot of 'skater' stores in Manhattan. They are the softest most comfortable tees one could ever don. While I don't think I will ever be able to end my addiction, I do think I need to start being a little more selective. I think part of growing up is that you have to stop wearing funny 'vintage' tees. This is unfortunate for me because I love a good laugh and a good tee, so it was kind of a match made in heaven. For example:

Hilarious right? Anyways, I think the days of me rockin' the funny tees are over. I was perusing a couple different t-shirt stores I like when I came across 2 shirts that were particularly hilarious. I pictured myself wearing them and people enjoying them with me. Unfortunately, the picture in my head depicted me as a student, a youth, a child looking for the easy laugh. And so thus came the realization that it is time for me to grow up and stop wearing such hilarious clothing. I have changed my diet and my outlook on life so why not mature a little. Though I have matured considerably since high school, I have not yet become a grown-up. Perhaps because I am not. But mostly because I still have that student mentality. I'm not saying I need to start acting like a suit, but I think a little less time looking for funny shirts to buy could be a good thing. I think I am at a point in my life where I have to stop using the phrase, "when I grow up I want to..." I should instead be figuring out ways to realistically accomplish those wants. Anyways, I'm just rambling. But seriously, these are hilarious:

Another thing I was thinking about was the huge laundry list of problems people try and medicate themselves for. I try and never take anything. When I am really sore I'll take an Aleve. But other than that, I haven't had any surgeries or excruciating pain so I have never had any need for Vicodin. I have ADHD but hated those meds so I just stopped taking them years ago. But it's astounding to me that people will take medication for anything. I was watching TV last night and saw a commercial for RLS. What's RLS you ask? Restless Leg Syndrome. Apparently if you can't sleep because you kick your legs at night, then fear not! There is now a drug you can take that will stop that restless leg once and for all! Seriously? WTF.
Here's a fitting quote from Bottle Rocket:
DIGNAN: I said to the DA, that cop who hit me must of given me CRS disease.
BOB: What's that?
DIGNAN: That's just what the DA asked. CRS is a disease where you can't remember shit.
ANTHONY: Like amnesia.
DIGNAN: Can't remember shit. CRS.
Anyways, that's all for now. Go big...

oh ps - sorry for the flurry of recent blogs. this week was a little on the boring side. I'll give you all a day or two to catch up before I post again. Unless something crazy happens tonight... like I leave the apartment...
pps - just got back from the gym. I now weigh 164 lbs. That's 10 lbs in a little under a month. With only 4 lbs to go I need to start looking ahead to figure out how to stop losing weight but also how not to gain any. That's where I always go wrong...
