Good news out there for you movie fans. 3 interesting little tidbits making their rounds today are very exciting to nerds and maybe even a few other people. We'll start with the biggest.
Warner Bros. announced the official new Batman title. Apparently it's, "The Dark Knight Rises." I'm pretty happy with that. If this is indeed Nolan's last outing at the helm for Batman, it sounds like it'll have somewhat of an ending. Either that or hopefully he sets it up where he can do a 4th one. And a 5th. And then a crossover called 'Batman: Inception' where Batman pulls an inception on all the bad guys but has to fight them in different dream levels. That would be ridiculous. Also Nolan squashed any hopes of seeing The Riddler, but I assume that Two Face will be back and also another fine cameo from The Scarecrow.
Second, James Cameron has finally confirmed shooting dates for the Avatar sequels. We'll be seeing 2 and 3 in 2014 and 2015. I can't wait. I loved Avatar and if he can make them as engrossing as that was, and as stunningly beautiful, then he'll have another couple billion dollars to his name.
Lastly, a few random things. 22 days until the new Harry Potter. Most of you don't care about that, but I'll be waiting on the edge of my seat until then. Also, Tony Scott has announced he's going to make Top Gun 2 which is pretty dumb, but the plot seems ok. It's about how technology has changed the Air Force and how it's about computer savvy nerds who now fly unmanned drones. It would be much cooler if it was about Maverick being called back for one last mission and they unfroze Goose's preserved body to fly with him.

Couple More Movie Things...
I'm sure most of you don't care as much about any of this nonsense as I do, but oh well, I just wanted to mention a couple more things.
First is a story that happened over the weekend you may have heard about. Kevin Smith (director of such terrible movies as Clerks, Clerks II, and every single movie he's made) was kicked off a Southwest flight because he was too fat. This is great on so many levels. I love that he got kicked off because I think he's incredibly annoying, a bad director, a worse writer, an awful actor and a huge lard ass. The gist of the story is that he was flying standby and they let him board but then realized he was too fat to sit in one seat so both he and anyone next to him would be comfortable so they kicked him off. He blogged about it and whined like a true douche (what kind of loser has a blog?) and Southwest issued an apology and refunded his money, which is pretty much where the story ends. His new movie Cop Out, is the first time Bruce Willis is going to be in an 'action' role and I have no interest in seeing it. It looks terrible. I may sneak into it to see Sean Williams Scott, who had me at hello, but other than that the movie is going to blow.
Moving on. This story was sent to me yesterday about the Avatar Blues. At first, the title made me think what I had already been thinking, that seeing other movies after that incredible 3-D experience just isn't the same. But it wasn't. It was about how people fell in love with Pandora and the Na'vi and are now depressed that it isn't real. Some people contemplated suicide. This is too much. People are ridiculous. This is an actual quote someone posted on a message board, "I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in 'Avatar.' " Are you f*cking kidding me? Apparently a lot of it stems from how beautiful Pandora is and how Earth could be like that to which my only response is: seriously? I mean, seriously? Earth could not be like that. Humans are not the Na'vi. Get a f*cking life. If you care so much about the environment, try recycling. Try and eat less. Try to not be so crazy.
Good grief. Go big.

One Two Three: Movies...
One
I finally saw The Hurt Locker. Meh. Not impressed. The acting was fine and I thought the movie did a great job of really making you feel the tension more so than any other war movie I've ever seen, but the characters weren't as flushed out as I would have liked for such a character driven movie. It seemed to me like it was just a really tense hour and a half instead of a story and nothing really happened at all. If you were planning on seeing it, don't move it to the top of your netflix queue or rush out to a redbox anytime soon...

Avatar continues to pile up the money, earning another 24 million this weekend. It's already technically the highest grossing movie ever, though that doesn't account for inflation (in which case Gone With the Wind is number 1 domestically and may never be topped). It has now earned 2.35 billion. Billion. Billion! That's insane. This movie may never be topped...Valentines Day somehow wrangled in almost 60 million which is huge for an opening weekend of a chick flick, especially one that was so bad. I mean it wasn't awful, but it was bad, and I love chick flicks. It's like it was shot in a weekend with no rehearsal. The acting was horrendous all around (surprisingly though Ashton did a descent job and I didn't hate George Lopez like I usually do) and Jessica Beil looked incredible as always (why she would get cast as a girl who can't find love is beyond me), and Jessica Alba still somehow gets work despite being possibly one of the worst actresses out there. The best part about the movie was Bradley Cooper's button down he was wearing, the whole movie all I could think of was where he got it.

I can't stress this enough: go rent Moon. Please. It's the best acting and story you will see in any film from last year. I am a big fan of the Oscars. They generally pick a group of movies for best picture that are mostly deserving and usually the best actor/actress nominees are deserving as well but this year it's turned into the Grammys. Worst choices ever. Hands down the best acting I've seen from a male lead last year (and one of the best in many years) was Sam Rockwell in Moon. It's incredible. It's also the best directing as far as pacing and story goes though I'm not going to argue against Avatar winning anything. It might not be the best story or acting, but it's surely the best movie, special effects, art direction, and directing based on it's look and the response it got alone. If not for that, in my book, Moon gets every Oscar there is. Do not be dismayed by any Sci-Fi label given to it, it's just a really interesting story that happens to take place on the Moon. Do yourself a favor and watch it. If you don't like it, I would love to hear why so I can tell you specifically why you're wrong and I'm right.
Anyway, go big or go home.

Avatar...
Why am I blogging at 4 in the morning? I just got home from a midnight screening of James Cameron's new movie Avatar and my mind is racing. I know I come home from movies a lot and launch into ramblings full of high flying superlatives, but I sh*t you not, this was the greatest movie going experience of my entire life. I honestly mean it. If you are planning on seeing this movie, I implore you to see it in IMAX 3-D. It was the first one I've seen in this format and I'm glad I saved it for this. James Cameron had a vision and he couldn't capture it with what was available so he literally had to invent the technology.
I was blown away. After spending the first few minutes getting used to the 3-D I was peeing my pants. I don't ever want to see another movie on a regular screen again. For starters the screen was 6 stories high and Cameron used every inch of it and filled it with the most visually stunning experience I have ever had. I went in worried about the hype, worried the story would be weak, worried I would hate the look of the movie and left with my jaw dropped. I can't stop thinking about it.
Please please please, if you have an IMAX near you, wait and see it there even if you can't get tickets for two weeks. It's worth the extra money. I promise you have never yet and will never see anything like this again for a very long time. If you don't have an IMAX theater near you or weren't planning on seeing it, stop being crazy and get to a theater as soon as you can.
